Have you ever tried to read between the lines of biblical narrative? We read that Joseph takes Mary with him to Bethlehem. Many assume God tells Joseph to take Mary. This is not indicated in the text. Joseph is kept form putting Mary away quietly by an angel’s intervention in a dream. At that point, he takes Mary into his home and, when he journeys to Bethlehem, he takes this nine month pregnant virgin with him! What is he thinking? It is entirely possible that rumor and innuendo concerning her pregnancy has swept though their small community; so much so that Joseph is concerned for her welfare if she stays alone. Sometimes, seemingly isolated decisions can be divinely ordained. When asked the birth, Herod’s scholars cite scripture:

“But you Bethlehem Ephratha, though you are small among the clans of Judah, Out of you will come for me, One who will become the ruler over Israel, Whose origins are form old, from days of eternity. He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord…and he will be their peace…” (Micah 5:2-5 NIV)
